The remarkable thing about Runciman’s work is that it is just as satisfying to the lay reader as it is to the scholar. In common with Rumciman writing generally this is constantinoplla approachable, easy reading but shallow political history. Runciman begins in with the conquering of Jerusalem and the many surrounding nations by the Muslims.
It provided plenty of background and a wonder regarding mankind’s survival. The inhabitants of the Sicilian city of Palermo slaughtered its Angevin garrison in Runciman then narrates the first crusade including the siege of Nicea, the battle near Dorylaeum, the siege of Antioch, and the expedition to and siege of Jerusalem.

Runciman also explores the runicman conflicts with the various Christian theological sects.
